Bulgarian Turks in North Cyprus

Some 2,000 Bulgarian Turks living in the TRNC will be permitted to cross into South Cyprus following Bulgaria's recent 1 entry to the EU, it has been claimed. Those holding either Bulgarian or Romanian passports | will now be treated as EU citizens 1 even if they entered the island through North Cyprus, according to a report in Greek Cypriot newspaper Alithia. Osman Tahir, spokesman for the Bulgarian Turkish Cultural Society, said the Greek Cypriot government had not yet confirmed the report.

Many Bulgarian Turks now living in North Cyprus settled here after being either expelled or fleeing the Communist regime in their homeland during the 1980s.

Those who attempted to participate in the 2005 Bulgarian elections by casting their votes at the Bulgarian Consulate in South Cyprus were barred from crossing into the country.
