Headlights on

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and all members of his Cabinet ordered their official cars to have their headlights switched on during daylight hours last week in support of a campaign launched by the Society for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents, which began on Monday, 12 of November. The association had urged all drivers who were abiding by traffic regulations and who wished to signal that they wanted to avoid an accident to put on their headlights as an example to others. Mr Soyer praised the association's efforts to bring down the toll of death and injury on TRNC roads. Forty-two people have died in traffic accidents so far this year in the TRNC. The campaign was given added impetus by a candle-lit vigil in Gazi Magusa on Tuesday in memory of seven young people who lost their lives in a road crash on December 24 last year. Bilgin Oza, mother of one of the victims, Orhun Oza, said the aim was to prevent other mothers from going through what I she and other parents had suffered.
