Bid to woo back Turkish students

TRNC National Education and Culture Minister Canan Oztoprak joined the rectors of the country's six universities at an Istanbul hotel to launch a promotion campaign aimed at attracting more students to North Cyprus.

The campaign was started after it emerged that, of 10,000 new Turkish students expected to come to North Cyprus this year, just 3,500 had enrolled. The minister said 27,000 students from Turkey, 10,000 from the TRNC and 3,000 from various countries around the world were currently studying at TRNC universities.

The universities had teaching staff from 35 countries and students from 60, she said.

Responding to questions, Mrs. Oztoprak put the annual expenses of a student in North Cyprus at about $10,000, but said this was halved for those with a scholarship.
